How to Name Your Design Business

Names. They’re how we are all recognized. They create a sense of identity for not alone people and places, but businesses and organizations. Without them, the world would be lost, and in disarray.

Your business’ name will shape the perception of your brand. Thus, learning how to effectively name your business is a pivotal step in creating a brand identity, and can help you navigate swiftly through this growingly competitive world.

This article will show you how to effectively name your design business so that it creates a powerful sense of identity that relates to both you and your audience, and allows you to grow and shape your brand around.

1. Brainstorm

Before you dive straight into the deep end and start creating name ideas, it’s important to start by reflecting on your business as a whole.

Think of words that you associate with you or your business. Some questions to ask yourself that could help spark some thoughts:

  • What do I want my brand to represent? For example integrity, creativity, innovation
  • What emotion do I want to invoke in people when they hear my brand name? For example happiness, confidence, humor
  • What words do I associate with myself as a designer?
  • Who is my target audience?
  • What is the purpose of my design business?

2. Narrow your focus and try out different combinations

Now, it’s time to remove any words that don’t resonate completely with you and what you want your brand to represent. Visualize what you want your brand to be and keep that image in mind when you’re narrowing down your wordbank.

If you reach saturation point, ask the people in your life who know you and your vision for help. A fresh set of eyes can offer a new perspective and introduce you to a point of view that you mighn’t have thought of before. When you have your list narrowed down, it’s time to get experiential. Merge different words and try out different combinations from your word bank and see what sticks. Take words that you think mightn’t go together and see what you come up with. You never know where it may take you!

3. The rule of three

You’ll be glad to know if you’ve made it this far you’ve made it past the hardest part! To keep pushing forward, select three options out of your list that you would be happy pursuing. When doing this, keep in mind the questions that you asked yourself at the beginning of the process, and see if it matches your needs and wants for your design business.

4. Rank your options

Now it’s time to compare your three options and rate them on a scale of 1-10 with regards to pronunciation and spelling, first-impressions, memorability, and purpose. See what name ranks highest, and go with it.

5. Check availability

After all your hard work, you must ensure that no one else is already using the name. To do this, you can do a basic domain search. You can use a tool like Godaddy, which will tell you if the name is available to use or not.

If the name is available and you’re happy with it; well done!
